The macula is located in the back of the eye and is important to visual acuity. Lutein and zeaxanthin are naturally found in the macula of the eye. These macular carotenoids accumulate in the macula and may serve as a protective barrier as light reaches the eye. They are powerful antioxidants and may protect cells against the damaging effects of free radicals, helping to support healthy vision.

Blue light is part of the light spectrum visible to the human eye. Chronic exposure to digital devices i.e. computers, tablets and cell phones may have an effect on eye health. Blue light is also associated with outdoor lighting—like the light from the sun. Indoor LED lights and other energy efficient lights are replacing conventional lighting to save money. These may emit more blue light, suggesting that our eyes will be exposed to more blue light than in the past.
